So you signed up for the Bellin Run, that’s wonderful, now what?
Whether this is your first Bellin Run, thirty-seventh, or something in between, you should know that you signed up for one of the top 10K races in the United States. From humble beginnings of just 881 participants in 1977, the race has grown to almost 20,000 runners and walkers. But it is not just the size of the field of athletes (and, yes we are all athletes!) we should be impressed with; it is knowing that you, along with your community have made a decision to get up and move and take control of your health.
Our Health and Wellness team has made it a point to educate us on the benefits of regular physical exercise and running and/or walking is a great place to start making it a habit. There is no expensive gym membership, no equipment to buy other than a good pair of shoes, and really no limits. You can run as far as your body will take you and I guarantee that you will be surprised of what you are capable of.
The Organizers of the Bellin Run love the event itself, BUT it is not the event itself that is really the true goal. Think of the actual Event as more of a reward for all your hard work. The goal of the Bellin run is to get people up and active and create new exercise habits while training for the Bellin Run. A 10K is the perfect distance for that because it is just long enough that you will want to do some training for it (Or risk severe soreness or even injury), but it is not too daunting to be afraid to even sign up. Below are just a few benefits of a regular running/walking program
- Running burns more calories in less time than almost any other continuous exercise.
- A regular running or walking program lowers your risk of life-threatening maladies such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.
- Walking is a low-impact exercise that produces less stress on the knees and joints than many other activities do.
- Both walking and running produce endorphins, brain chemicals that make you feel happy and confident. (Runners High Really does exist!!)
- Both are social activities—you can run or walk with a friend, your kids, or even strangers in a race.
So to help keep you motivated and to not let the Bellin Run sneak up on you, the Bellin Run Captain Team will be sending a weekly newsletter like this to give you some tips and other information. As always, don’t hesitate to contact any one of us for more information.
